“The Myths of Gdansk. The Antique in Art of the Protestant Res publica” by Marcin Kaleciński is the first release of a new series entitled Gedania Artistica published by słowo/obraz/terytoria. Kaleciński draws attention to the ideological dimension of the renaissance motifs present in Gdansk’s art. His analysis considers the city’s identity as a protestant res publica, built on the conception of a New Rome. By contrast to Germany cities, Gdansk was not granted the imperial right to call itself a republic. Thus, according to the author, the city cultivated a visual tradition that sought to emphasize its political, religious and cultural difference. In addition to painting and architecture, Kaleciński also examines more ephemeral and usually marginalized works such as frames, royal entrances and fireworks, placing his analysis on a broad historical and cultural background.
